Drivers need to implement a methodical pattern of scanning when driving in all weather and road conditions.
Here are a few tips to help you be more aware of your surroundings:
- Always look well ahead in your path of travel. It is best to look 15 – 20 seconds ahead, which is about two traffic lights.
- Check the rear-view mirror every five to 10 seconds and after completing a manoeuvre.
- Consistently look for hazards in your driving environment. This would be scanning from building to building or field to field. When approaching an intersection or side street, glance at those areas to see if any vehicles are approaching and if they have a stop sign. If there are pedestrians waiting to cross, be prepared and plan accordingly.
- Scan and move your eyes every two seconds. This will help you be fully aware of surroundings.
- Respond to hazards well in advance by actively communicating to other drivers. This includes altering your speed, changing position, using the turn signal or brake lights, honking the horn, etc. These actions will help the drivers behind you know what you are doing.
- No one should ever pass or follow you unnoticed. There should be no surprises if you are fully aware of your surroundings.
Developing scanning techniques will help you be a more proactive driver and be more ready to react to situations as they occur.
